If you’ve seen the latest AI yearbook trend, you may have wondered: Can I just use an AI yearbook app instead of having professional senior pictures taken?
AI-generated yearbook photos can be fun. Upload a few selfies, choose a retro style, and suddenly your teen looks like they stepped straight out of a 1990s yearbook.
And honestly? Have fun with it.
But there’s a big difference between creating an AI image and planning a senior portrait experience.
When you book professional senior portraits, you’re not just paying for photographs. You’re creating an experience around your senior and documenting who they are during one of the biggest transitions of their life.
That’s the part an app can’t give you.
A Senior Portrait Session Is an Experience
Think about everything that happens before you ever see the final photographs.
You and your senior choose outfits. We talk about what they like, what they don’t like, and what makes them feel comfortable. We plan locations and think about how to incorporate the things that make your senior who they are.
Then comes the actual session.
Maybe we’re exploring Fort Collins or Loveland. Maybe we’re walking around downtown Greeley. Maybe we’re finding a location somewhere in Northern Colorado that feels like your senior.
There are outfit changes.
There are probably some moments where we all laugh because a pose doesn’t work quite the way we thought it would.
And there’s usually a point when your senior realizes, Hey, I’m actually pretty good at this.
That’s an experience.
And for many seniors, it’s one of those things they’ll remember about their senior year long after the photographs are sitting on the wall.
Your Senior Gets to Be the Center of Attention
Senior year can feel like a blur.
School. Sports. Activities. Friends. Jobs. College applications. Graduation.
There’s always something else that needs to be done.
A senior portrait session is different.
For a few hours, the focus is completely on your senior.
We aren’t rushing through a school picture line with a camera pointed at them for 30 seconds.
We’re taking the time to create something specifically for them.
If they’re nervous about having their picture taken, we work through it.
If they have an idea they want to try, we try it.
If something doesn’t feel like them, we move on.
The session is built around the person standing in front of my camera.
That’s Where the Personalization Comes In
This is one of my favorite parts of senior photography.
Your senior doesn’t have to fit into a preset template.
If she plays violin, bring the violin.
If he lives for soccer, let’s incorporate that part of his life.
If she loves books, let’s find a way to include them.
If their dog is their best friend, bring the dog.
If they have a favorite place in Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Ault or somewhere else in Northern Colorado, let’s talk about it.
Those details aren’t just props.
They’re pieces of your senior’s story.
And that’s what makes the photographs personal.
AI Can Create an Image. It Can’t Create Your Senior’s Experience.
This is where I think the AI yearbook trend gets interesting.
AI can create some incredibly convincing images.
It can change clothing, hairstyles, backgrounds and eras. It can turn a handful of selfies into a completely different-looking portrait.
That’s pretty amazing technology.
But your senior isn’t going to remember sitting on the couch uploading selfies to an app.
They’re going to remember getting ready for their senior session.
They’re going to remember the outfit they chose.
They’re going to remember the location.
They’re going to remember laughing during the session.
They’re going to remember seeing their photographs for the first time.
The experience becomes part of the story.
And Then There Are the Photographs
Of course, we still want beautiful photographs.
But that’s where your senior portrait experience continues after the session.
Instead of the images simply living on a phone, you can choose how you want to remember this season.
Maybe that’s a beautiful album.
Maybe it’s wall art for your home.
Maybe it’s gift portraits for grandparents.
Maybe it’s graduation announcements.
Maybe it’s social media images your senior can share with friends.
The photographs become something you can actually hold, display and revisit.
What About the Yearbook?
Your yearbook photo and your senior portraits don’t necessarily have to serve the same purpose.
Your school may require one specific image for the yearbook. An AI-generated image may or may not meet your school’s requirements, so always check with your school before submitting one.
But your senior portraits can be so much more than one head-and-shoulders photograph.
They’re an opportunity to document your senior’s personality, interests, style and this very specific moment in their life.
The yearbook gives you one photograph.
A senior portrait session gives you a story.

I actually think the AI yearbook trend is fun.
If your senior wants to see what they’d look like in a 1990s yearbook, go for it.
Make the picture.
Send it to Grandma.
Laugh about the hair.
Try another decade.
And, full disclosure, I’m using AI to help me write this blog post. 😂
So no, I’m definitely not anti-AI.
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the technology. I just wouldn’t confuse a fun digital trend with the reason you invest in professional senior portraits.
You’re not booking a photographer because your phone can’t take a picture. You’re booking a photographer because you want an experience designed around your senior.
And that experience becomes part of the story.
AI Can Show You a Version of Your Senior. Your Portrait Session Shows You Your Senior.
Years from now, you probably won’t care that your senior once had an AI-generated 1990s yearbook photo.
You’ll care about remembering the person they actually were.
The clothes they loved.
The things they were passionate about.
The places they went.
The people and pets they loved.
The way they laughed.
The person they were right before they headed into the next chapter.
That’s what senior pictures are really about.
AI can create an image. A senior portrait experience gives you memories, photographs and something tangible to carry those memories forward.
And that is something I don’t think will ever go out of style.
