Wondering where to take senior pictures in Fort Collins? Fort Collins has so many different settings for senior pictures, from urban spots to natural areas and everything in between. That means your senior portraits don’t have to look like everyone else’s.

The best location isn’t necessarily the most popular spot on Instagram. It’s the location that fits your senior, their personality, their style, and the kind of images you want to create.

As a Fort Collins senior photographer, I have several locations I return to again and again because each one gives us something different. Sometimes we’ll even combine two locations during a senior session. That gives us completely different scenery and keeps the gallery from feeling like every image was taken in the same place.

Here are a few of my go-to Fort Collins-area locations for senior portraits.

Old Town Fort Collins

If your senior loves an urban look, Old Town Fort Collins is a fun place to start.

The historic buildings, colorful storefronts, and all the different textures give us lots to work with. We can move around and get a variety of images without spending the session driving from one spot to another.

It’s especially fun for seniors who want something a little more modern or playful instead of the traditional field-and-trees senior pictures.

Maddie’s session is a great example of how much variety we can get in Old Town. We can go from architectural details to colorful streets and even grab a few images that feel more like a day out in Fort Collins.

River’s Edge Natural Area

For a more natural Colorado feel, River’s Edge Natural Area gives us a completely different look from Old Town.

There are trees, trails, grasses, and water, so we can get a variety of images without needing a dramatic mountain location. It’s a great choice for a senior who wants their pictures to feel more relaxed and outdoorsy.

Jada’s senior session is a great example of how much variety we can get in a natural setting. We can use the water, trees, grasses, and trails to create images that don’t all look like they were taken in the same place.

And that’s really what I’m looking for when I choose a location. It should work with your senior, not take over the picture.

The Rock Garden

Want something a little different?

The Rock Garden is a fun choice for a senior who wants something other than the typical field or park setting. The rocks, stonework, greenery, and water give us a lot of different ways to photograph them.

Delaney’s senior portraits are a great example. We used several different parts of the area, and the images don’t all feel like they were taken in the same place.

And this is a good example of why knowing a location is about more than just knowing where it is. Knowing how to use the light, backgrounds, textures, and everything around you can make a big difference in the final images.

CSU Flower Trial Garden

If your senior loves flowers and color, the CSU Flower Trial Garden is a great option in Fort Collins.

There’s something I think a lot of people miss when they first see the garden.

You might look at the trial beds and think, “Those plants are tiny.” And yes, part of the garden is there to test new plant varieties. But don’t stop there. Across the street, around the university buildings, there are mature flowering plants and established landscaping that give us much fuller, colorful backgrounds for senior portraits.

Cassie’s senior session is a great example of what I mean.

You have to know what you’re looking for. There are beautiful spots here that aren’t necessarily obvious when you first walk into the garden.

Horsetooth Reservoir

If your senior wants mountains, water, and a little more of that Colorado feel, Horsetooth Reservoir is a great choice.

The rocks, water, grasses, and mountain views give us a lot to work with, and we can create images that feel very different from what we’d get in town.

It’s also a completely different look from Old Town. That’s one of the reasons I like having different locations to choose from. We can find a setting that fits your senior instead of trying to make every senior session look the same.

Jayna’s session at Horsetooth Reservoir is a great example of how much variety we can get from the landscape.

Lions Open Space, just outside Fort Collins

Just north of Fort Collins in nearby LaPorte, Lions Open Space gives us a more open, natural setting for senior portraits.

It’s a good choice for seniors who want something quieter and more relaxed, with open space, natural textures, and more of that Colorado landscape.

Sophia’s session is a great example of the variety we can get here. We can use the landscape and different textures around us to create images that feel natural without looking like every other outdoor senior session.

Sometimes, heading just a little outside Fort Collins is all it takes to give your senior portraits a completely different look.

You Don’t Always Have to Choose Just One Location

One of my favorite ways to create variety during a senior session is to combine locations.

For example, we might start at the Rock Garden and then head into Old Town Fort Collins. The two locations have completely different looks, so we can get a lot of variety without making the session feel scattered.

The goal isn’t to see how many locations we can squeeze into one session. It’s about choosing places that give your senior the variety we need.

So, Which Fort Collins Location Is Right for Your Senior?

That’s where I come in.
