Looking for senior picture outfit ideas? Whether you’re planning your session in Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Windsor, Eaton, Severance, Wellington, or anywhere in Northern Colorado, choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference. The best senior portraits aren’t about following trends. They’re about wearing clothes that help you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself.
One of the questions I hear most often is, “What should I wear for my senior pictures?” The good news is there isn’t one perfect answer. Every senior is different, and your outfits should reflect your personality and interests.
Here are 10 outfit ideas that photograph beautifully and help you create senior portraits that you’ll love seeing on your walls, in albums, and in your hands for years to come.
1. Start with Your Favorite Casual Outfit
Choose something you’d naturally wear if you were meeting friends, heading downtown, or going out with family. A great pair of jeans with a favorite top, a casual dress, or a comfortable sweater can create timeless portraits that truly reflect your personality.
If you’re buying something new, shop a few weeks before your session so you have time to try it on, make sure it’s comfortable, and exchange or return it if needed. You’d be surprised how often clients are cutting tags off brand-new outfits at the beginning of a session. Taking the time to wear your outfit before session day helps you discover whether it fits well, feels comfortable, and lets you move naturally. When you’re comfortable, you’ll look more relaxed and confident in your photos.

2. Wear Something a Little More Dressy
One of my favorite things about senior sessions is creating a variety of looks. I always recommend bringing at least one outfit that’s a little dressier than what you’d normally wear. It doesn’t have to be formal. Whether it’s a flowy dress, a tailored suit, or a sport coat with a button-down shirt, a dressier outfit adds variety and often creates some of the most timeless portraits from your session.
That might be:
- A flowy dress
- A jumpsuit
- A blazer
- A sport coat or suit
- A nice button-down shirt
- A skirt and top
Dressy doesn’t have to mean formal. Including one elevated outfit adds variety and often creates some of the most timeless portraits from your session.
If we’re planning to photograph near a river or creek, consider bringing a dress you don’t mind getting a little wet. Flowy dresses create beautiful movement in the water and often become some of my clients’ favorite portraits.

3. Layers Add Variety
One of the easiest ways to create different looks without bringing an entirely new outfit is by adding layers. A jean jacket, flannel shirt, cardigan, leather jacket, oversized sweater, or vest can completely change the style of an outfit in just a few seconds.
Layers also give you more variety in your finished portraits without taking extra time for a full outfit change. We can photograph an outfit with and without a jacket or sweater, giving you two different looks from the same clothing.
Choose layers that complement your outfit instead of hiding it. The goal is to add interest and texture, not overwhelm your look.

4. Choose Colors That Complement Colorado’s Scenery
One of the best things about photographing seniors in Northern Colorado is the variety of beautiful locations we have throughout the year. Choosing colors that complement the scenery helps you stand out while keeping the focus on you.
Some of my favorite colors for senior portraits include:
- Olive green
- Navy
- Rust
- Mustard
- Burgundy
- Soft blues
- Cream
- Black
Bright neon colors can be tricky because they often look different as the light changes throughout your session. A neon shirt might appear one shade in full sun and another in the shade, making it difficult to keep your portraits looking consistent. Classic colors and earth tones photograph more naturally and let your personality shine.
If you’re planning a session in a field, by the river, or in the mountains, I’ll help you choose colors that work beautifully with your location during your consultation.
5. Don’t Forget Your Shoes
Shoes are one of the most overlooked parts of a senior outfit, but they often appear in full-length portraits. Choose shoes that complement each outfit and fit the style you’re going for, whether that’s cute sneakers, boots, sandals, heels, western boots, or dress shoes.
Don’t forget about your socks, either! If they might show, make sure they coordinate with your outfit. I once photographed a senior wearing black pants and black shoes, but she had bright blue socks on. She told me afterward she wished she had thought about them before her session because they stood out more than she expected.
If there’s a pair of shoes you absolutely want in your portraits, make sure they’re packed before you leave home. I once had a senior forget her favorite cowboy boots and call her sister (who was still sleeping), who drove 40 minutes to bring them to the session. We got the photos she wanted, but a quick checklist beforehand would have saved everyone the extra trip!
Before your session, lay out each complete outfit from head to toe, including your shoes, socks, jewelry, and accessories. It’s a simple way to catch little details and make sure nothing gets left behind.

6. Accessories Complete the Look
The right accessories can add personality and help pull an outfit together without taking attention away from you.
Consider bringing:
- Hats
- Necklaces
- Bracelets
- Scarves
- Rings
- Hair accessories
- Sunglasses (for a few fun photos)
If you’re not sure what works best, don’t worry. I also have a collection of hats, jewelry, and a few outerwear pieces that you’re welcome to borrow during your session. Sometimes the perfect finishing touch is something you hadn’t even planned on wearing.

7. Bring More Than You Think You’ll Need
Most seniors bring three to five outfits, but I always encourage bringing a few extra options. Even if we don’t use everything, having choices gives us the flexibility to match your outfit to each location, the lighting, and the overall look we’re creating.
I recently photographed a senior who almost left one shirt in the car because she wasn’t sure she wanted to wear it. We decided to give it a try anyway, and it ended up being one of our favorite looks from her entire session. You never know which outfit is going to shine once you see it in the right location.
Don’t be afraid to bring more options than you think you’ll need. We can always narrow them down together. I bring a pop-up changing tent, so outfit changes are quick and easy.
8. Coordinate with Your Locations
One of the best ways to create a beautiful variety of senior portraits is to match your outfits to the locations we’ll be using. Different settings naturally lend themselves to different styles.
A flowy dress looks beautiful in a wildflower field or by the river, while jeans with a leather jacket or a casual outfit often fit perfectly in downtown Greeley, Fort Collins or an urban locations in Northern Colorado. Choosing outfits that complement each location helps create a collection of portraits with a variety of looks and feels.
During your consultation, we’ll talk through your outfit ideas and the locations you’ve chosen so everything works together beautifully.
9. Bring Wrinkle-Free Outfits
Wrinkles are much more noticeable in professional portraits than most people realize, especially in dresses, button-down shirts, and linen fabrics. Take a few minutes to steam or iron your outfits before your session so they look their best.
I’ll never forget one of my first senior sessions. She arrived with all of her outfits stuffed into a bag in the back seat of her pickup truck. By the time we started photographing, everything was wrinkled. It’s a mistake I’ve never forgotten because it’s so easy to prevent.
If you’re bringing multiple outfits, hang them instead of folding them whenever possible. A garment bag or hanging them in your vehicle can help keep everything looking fresh until it’s time to change.
10. Wear What Makes You Feel Confident
After all the outfit tips, this is the advice I hope you remember most.
The best outfit isn’t necessarily the trendiest one or the most expensive one. It’s the one that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself.
When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows. You stop worrying about your clothes, relax into the moment, and your personality naturally shines through. Those are the portraits that families often fall in love with because they capture the real you.
The right outfit doesn’t make the portrait. It simply helps you feel like the best version of yourself.
My Best Outfit Tips
Before your session, take a few minutes to:
- Try on every outfit.
- Make sure everything fits comfortably.
- Steam or iron your clothes.
- Remove tags.
- Pack a few extra outfit options.
- Pack shoes separately.
- Don’t forget your jewelry and accessories.
- Bring a hairbrush, lip balm, and any makeup you may want for touch-ups.
A little preparation helps your session run smoothly and gives us more time creating beautiful portraits. Before you leave home, put on your complete outfit from head to toe, including your shoes, socks, jewelry, and accessories. It’s a simple way to catch little details before session day and make sure everything works together.
