A radically honest breakdown of pricing, options, and whether we’re the right fit for each other.

Anyone with a phone can take pictures. That’s just the truth. And honestly? Some of those pictures are really good.
So what exactly are you paying for when you hire a professional photographer like me?
The short answer: you’re paying for an artist. Someone who understands light – how to find it, shape it, and use it to flatter your face and set a mood. Someone who thinks about framing, angles, and composition not just to make a “nice photo,” but to create an image that has a personality of its own. A feeling. A story. And it doesn’t stop there. Professional photographers invest in ongoing education, attend industry conferences, and stay current on techniques, trends, and the art of their craft. That knowledge shows up in every single image.
The longer answer? Let me break it all down. Pricing, options, the works. Real talk, start to finish.

The Real Price Range: What Does Professional Photography Actually Cost in NoCo?
Let’s get the number out of the way first because that’s what everyone wants to know.
For senior portrait photography in Northern Colorado, here’s a realistic range across different types of photographers and services:
- Entry-level / shoot-and-burn photographers: $25 – $400 (digital files only, no print products, no guided ordering experience)
- Mid-range photographers: $400 – $900 (session fee, some products, limited experience)
- Full-service boutique photographer like me: $1,100$3,500+ (session fee + product credit deposit, heirloom products, fully guided experience)
At Carol Dunnigan Photography, sessions range from $850 to $1,200 to get started, and my average client invests between $1,600 and $2,500. Some invest more. I’m transparent about this upfront because no one likes surprises when it comes to money.
Your Options: An Honest Comparison
Here are the main ways you can approach getting senior pictures taken, and what the tradeoffs actually are.
Option 1: DIY / Phone Photos
Cost: Free (or the price of a new phone)
Pros: Instant, casual, you control everything, and some phone cameras are genuinely impressive now.
Cons: Lighting, posing, and editing are all on you. Most people don’t know how to direct someone in front of a camera, and it shows. These work great for Instagram stories. They’re not the same as a portrait that will hang on your wall for 20+ years.
Best for: People who want quick snapshots and aren’t looking for a guided, professional experience.

Option 2: Shoot-and-Burn Photographer
Cost: Typically $25 – $400 for a session + digital files
Pros: Lower upfront cost. You get digitals and can print wherever you want.
Cons: You’re on your own for printing, and the guidance, experience, and product quality vary a lot. Many shoot-and-burn photographers are newer or building their portfolio. Printing at Target or Walgreens isn’t the same as professional lab printing. Professional lab prints are archival quality, meaning they’re designed to last for decades. Prints from a drugstore or big box store use different inks and paper that can fade and yellow much faster than you’d expect.
Best for: Budget-conscious families who want digitals and are comfortable handling printing themselves.

Option 3: Full-Service Boutique Photographer (That’s Me)
Cost: $1,100 – $3,500+ at CDP
Pros: This is a fully guided experience from start to finish. I help with outfit planning, location selection, and posing. After your session we go through your images together and I help you choose artwork and products that will actually make it onto your walls, and not stuffed in a box or a drawer. I use professional labs selected specifically for their print quality and archival standards.
Cons: It’s a significant investment. It’s not the right fit for everyone’s budget, and I’m okay with that.
Best for: Families who want a stress-free, memorable experience and heirloom-quality products they’ll have for decades.
How My Pricing Actually Works
I use a creative fee model. Here’s what that means.
My Essentials session is $850 to get started. That includes a $200 session fee and a $650 product credit deposit that goes directly toward your artwork and products at your ordering appointment. It’s designed for clients who want a beautiful, focused session in downtown Ault with one hour, two outfits, and one location.
My Experience session is $1,200 to get started. That includes a $200 session fee and a $1,000 product credit deposit, with the opportunity to invest more at your ordering appointment. This covers more locations, more time, and more flexibility across Greeley, Fort Collins, Loveland, and surrounding areas.
The product credit deposit is not a gimmick. It’s real money you’ve already set aside that goes straight toward the things you’re going to want to take home.
My pricing formula is straightforward: I price based on the true cost of producing high-quality artwork at professional labs, plus my time, experience, and the cost of running a legitimate business. I’ve been doing this since 2009. My pricing reflects the quality, experience, and care that goes into every single session.
Who I’m a Great Fit For
I’m the right photographer for you if:
- You want more than just digital files. You want something you can hold, frame, and display.
- You want a guided, low-stress experience where someone walks you through every step.
- You value artistic, intentional photography over volume and speed.
- You’re a senior (or a senior’s mom) who wants portraits that capture who you actually are right now.
- You understand that quality has a cost and you’re ready to invest in it.

Who I’m Probably Not a Fit For
And I mean this with zero judgment:
- You’re primarily looking for a digital file package at the lowest price point.
- You want to handle your own printing and products.
- Your budget is under $800.
- You’re not sure senior portraits are worth the investment.
If that’s you, there are great photographers at every price point. I’d genuinely rather you find someone who’s the right fit than book with me and feel like you overspent. That’s not the experience I want for you.
Still on the Fence? That’s Okay.
If you’re still on the fence, that’s okay. Not everyone is at the same place, and I’d rather you make the right decision for your family than feel pressured into anything.
Some people immediately understand the value of professional photography. They’ve seen the difference. They know that images sitting in a digital folder are not the same as a canvas on the wall that stops you in your tracks every time you walk by it.
Others are still figuring that out. I had a mom come to me for her younger daughter after using a different photographer for her older daughter. She walked away from that experience without products and without images that truly reflected who her daughter was. She didn’t want that to happen again.
My job isn’t to convince anyone. That’s why I offer a consultation before every session – in person if you’re local, or over Zoom if you’re further out. We go over everything together: your vision, your timeline, your investment, and whether we’re the right fit for each other. No pressure, no obligation. Just a real conversation.
Ready to Talk? Here’s What to Do Next.
