Your senior session is all about celebrating you -your personality, your style, and this once-in-a-lifetime season of your life. The right outfits help you look and feel your best while keeping the focus where it belongs: on you.
When planning your senior picture outfits, there are two sides of the coin: what works beautifully in photos, and what can become a distraction. Here are some tips, ideas, and a few wardrobe no-nos Ive learned over the years as a senior photographer in Northern Colorado.
What TO Wear for Your Senior Session
Bring Multiple Outfits
Bring 3-4 outfits allows for variety and different looks in your photos. Think of it as casual + dressy + something fun or trendy.
Choose Comfort and Confidence
You want your personality to shine through, so wear outfits that make you feel good and move easily. Confidence photographs better than any accessory.
Consider the Location and Season
If your photos are outdoors, think about the backdrop and the weather. A flowy dress in a summer meadow works beautifully, while cozy sweaters look perfect in fall colors.
Reflect Your Personal Style
Do you prefer casual, dressy, or a mix of both? Let your style guide your choices.

Outfit Ideas
Classic and Timeless
- Dresses or skirts with blouses always elegant and versatile.
- Collared shirts and dress pants a great option for a more formal look.
- Neutral colors like black, gray, denim, and earth tones are always safe choices. White can also look beautiful, but not every shade of white flatters every skin tone.
Trendy and Expressive
- Boho-inspired outfits maxi skirts, lace tops, crochet details, layered jewelry.
- Casual chic jeans, a stylish top, and a statement jacket for an effortless vibe.
- Bold colors & subtle patterns they can highlight your personality when styled carefully.
Specific Suggestions
- Matching skirt and shirt sets have become a fun option for seniors looking for something unique and personalized.
- Senior Skirt Combos (customized with your name, school, and year).
- A comfortable fit-and-flare midi dress (great for variety and movement).
What NOT to Wear for Your Senior Session
While there are endless outfit possibilities, there are a few things I recommend avoiding to make sure your images stay timeless and flattering.
1. Large, Bold Patterns
Oversized prints can overpower your photos. Instead of your smile, the shirt takes center stage. Subtle patterns and textures photograph much better.
2. Neon Colors
Trust me on this one: neon colors are incredibly tricky to photograph. I once photographed a neon prom dress, and in every single photo, the dress looked a completely different shade. Bright neon’s also cast unwanted color onto your skin. I give all my clients a Senior Experience Guide with great tips, including for dressing by body type and skin tone, so youll know exactly what works for you.
3. Prominent Logos & Graphics
Big logos and text are distracting and will date your photos. Timeless > trendy here.
4. Wrinkled or Dirty Clothing
Bring clothes on hangers so they stay fresh until its time to shoot. When I first started working with high school seniors years ago, I had a female client show up with her very small pick-up truck. Her clothes had been tossed in the back of her pickup truck without garment bags or hangers. By the time she arrived, everything was wrinkled. It’s a mistake that’s easy to avoid by bringing your outfits on hangers.
5. Undergarments That Show
Visible bra straps, mismatched colors, or undergarments peeking through can ruin an otherwise perfect outfit.
I’ve seen it happen! Years ago, I had a client wear an animal-print bra under a sheer black top, guess what stood out in every photo? Guess what stood out in every photo? The bra instead of her beautiful smile.. Another time, a senior wore bright underwear under a sheer white dress, and it distracted from what would have been a gorgeous look. Choosing undergarments that blend in and work with your outfits makes a huge difference.
6. Ill-Fitting Clothes
Clothes that are too tight, too baggy, or highlight insecurities will distract you from enjoying your session. Comfortable and confident is always the goal.
7. Too Many Outfits of the Same Style or Color
Variety is key! Don’t just bring all jeans and tees (or all black). Mixing it up gives you more variety in your gallery.
8. Shoes (and Socks!) That Don’t Work
Dirty gym shoes, mismatched socks, or uncomfortable heels can limit your posing.
I once had a senior wear dark jeans with a black plaid top and black shoessuch a great look. But her baby blue socks peeked out, and she instantly regretted the choice. Those little details are easy to overlook before your session but surprisingly noticeable in your final images.
9. Clothes That Are Too Short or Revealing
Youll be sitting, standing, squatting, and moving during your session. If youre constantly tugging or adjusting, itll show in the photos. Choose pieces that allow you to relax and enjoy the experience.
Final Tip
Remember, your senior pictures should look like you on your very best day. If you’re unsure about an outfit, bring it anyway. We’ll go through everything together before we start, and I’ll help you choose the combinations that photograph best. My goal is for you to leave your session feeling confident, comfortable, and excited about your images.
